Why Africa?

The other day in my world literature class we viewed the film Hotel Rwanda. During the post screening-discussion, one of my peers asked the question, “Why Africa”? What he meant was, why is it that Africa always seems to have a lot of war/conflict among its people. Now, our class had a huge set of discussion questions, so we didn’t get to cover his. But, I’d like to talk about it for a bit.

Here is Africa:

AFRICA

Now, as we all know, Africa is home to many people. Just like in any country, the people are split up into groups. It just so happens that in Africa’s case, these group divisions were established centuries ago. Now, at times these groups, or tribes, would fight. Sometimes over land, sometimes over other things.

But that still doens’t answer the question.

However, colonialism does.

Europe saw Africa as free land, so, decided to come in and colonize certain parts.

So what does this mean? Well, basically “The West” came in and carved up the different territories of Africa. Now, let’s talk about conflict. So, as we already said, Africa had established groups. We also said that sometimes these groups fought. So now, “The West” and basically says to these tribes, “hey, you all are now part of the same country, play nice.” In some cases, tribes who had been feuding for ages were now told that they were part of a country now.

So, does that mean the fighting stops?

Of course not!

If tribe A has been warring with tribe B for 2000 years, what makes you think they are just going to magically stop now?

Now, this isn’t a full explanation of why war.conflict occurs in Africa, but it is a partial. Many times, colonial countries were established without full knowledge of what has going on between groups and tribes. Which is why I think there was been a large amount of fighting in the region.

But hey, these are just my thoughts. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Peace

Man and Female roles in the show Claymore

A couple of years ago I began watch Anime more heavily. I had been a big fan when I was younger, but then I backed away for a little bit. When anime started to spark my interest again, I started looking for new shows to watch. One series that I really enjoyed is a little show called Claymore (I believe I have talked about it before).

Well, I have begun watching the series again; I started a couple of days ago. This makes the third time that I have viewed the series. But this time, I noticed something that I think is worth talking about a little bit. Claymore actually has very interesting view on men/women and their different roles in society.

First, it might be helpful to provide some background info. So, here is a passage from Wikipedia:

In a world where humans coexist with sentient monsters called yoma (妖魔 yōma?) that feed on human innards, a group, simply called the Organization, has created an order of half-human, half-yoma warriors to protect humans from yoma, for a large fee. Based on the large swords they carry, the people of this world have named these warriors Claymores. They are also referred to as “silver-eyed witches”, based on their appearance and seemingly cold nature toward others. Claymores, as well as yoma, possess bodily energy called yoki, which allows them to perform superhuman feats. Claymores who charge their yoki auras beyond the limit that their bodies can sustain turn into hideous creatures called awakened beings. Like yoma, awakened beings crave human flesh, the difference being that awakened beings are much more powerful. Each Claymore is ranked based on his or her strength and ability in comparison to other Claymores. There are 47 ranks corresponding to the number of regions of the continent, and each Claymore is assigned a different region of the continent wherein to slay yoma.

During the premise, a Claymore named Clare heads to a small town and meets Raki, a boy whose parents were killed by a yoma. Later that night, Clare heads toward Raki’s home and kills his brother Zaki, who is revealed to be the yoma that killed Raki’s parents. The yoma had taken over Zaki’s body when he and Raki witnessed the murder of their parents at the hands of the same yoma when they were but children. Out of gratitude, Raki ends up following Clare from town to town during her missions to exterminate yoma. The two travel together until they are separated when Clare is forced to battle a sadistic Claymore named Ophelia. Before parting, Clare promises to find him if she survives. The story becomes a tale of revenge, as Clare seeks to confront someone from her past.

Now for those of you all wondering, Claymore relies on a large group of female protagonists. There are actually very few males in the series at all.

But, since males are the minority, let’s start with them first.

Weak Males:

The main ma character is Raki. Raki is probably one of the weakest characters that I’ve ever since in a series. Rarely does he fight back when he and Clare are in a tough spot and for most of the series he can be seen crying in a corner somewhere (literally). What’s worse is that Raki really wants to be brave, but he can’t bring himself to actually do it. His saving grace is that he is very loyal.

Now, most of the evil creatures, the yoma, are portrayed as males. Many of them are slow and a lot of them are just dumb, which is high they are so easily beaten.

Let’s talk about the lore of Claymore for a moment. It is mentioned that back in the day, there were both male and female Claymore fighting evil, but event all the males were phased out.

But why!?

Well, here is how the series explains it. Since Claymores are both human and yoma, they have increase strength. In battle they are able to switch on their yoma side for more power. Now, each Claymore has yoki limits. Every time a Claymore passes their yoki limit, becomes harder for them to stay human.

Simple right?

Not so much.

You see, when a Claymore passes his or her limits, it’s the equivalent of a pleasurable sexual experience. When a Claymore surpasses it last yoki limit, not only do they turn into a great monster (an Awakened Being), but they also experience what is the equivalent of a giant orgasm.

It was said that the male Claymore turned into Awakened Beings faster because of the sexual aspect.

So, basically, according to this show, most males are slow and only want sex.

“Strong” Males:

The leaders of “the Organization,” the group that creates Claymores are males. They are portrayed as sneaky and manipulative. The only reason why I classify them as powerful is because they call the shots. But even then some female Claymores start to rebel.

Isley, the ruler of the North, is probably the only true powerful male in the series. He is all about war. But, unfortunately, he doesn’t show up till maybe the last six or seven episodes (there are 27), so there isn’t much to say about him.

Now, let’s go to the females!

Weak Females:

None!

Ha, just kidding, kind of. The only weak female characters in the show are children and woman who are being attacked by yoma.

Strong Females:

All of them!

Just kidding again, kind of. Like I said before, ALL the current Claymores (the ones that you get to know and love) are female.

Now, what I thought was interesting was the ranking system. Each Claymore has a rank; 1 is the highest, 47 is the lowest. Our main protagonist, Clare, is number 47. Even so, she is able to fight and contender with people who are in the single digits and she is able to fight the most powerful Awakened Being in the World.

That's Clare

By the way, the most powerful Awakened Being is Priscilla.

Dang, we men are too weak to even be the strongest monster!?

Conclusion:

I slightly noticed some of these sentiments the first two times I saw the series, but this third viewing really drove things home.

Now, I wonder if the creature had these views in mind when he or she created the idea for the show. Regardless, I just thought it was something to note.

BUT, I encourage you to watch the show; it’s still really great. It’s on my top 10 favorite animes of all time.

Prepaid ???

So, I’m think about getting a prepaid phone.

NO, not so I can go out a cheat!

And honestly, if I do get one, it won’t be until sometime next year after a I graduate.  Well, the main reason is why I’m thinking about considering a prepaid service is because of the price and the ability to get a OK android phone.

Now, about a month ago, I said I was looking at a contract service. That has since changed, let me explain why.

I’m going to give you the price for Single Line plans. Now, of course you are going to want data, so that will be included in here:

T-Mobile

  • $79.99- for Unlimited mins, text, and data (2 GB of fast data)
  • $89.99- for Unlimited mins, text, and data (5 GB of fast data)

Sprint

Everything Data:

  • $69.99- 450 mins
  • $89.99- 900 mins

Everything Plan:

  • $99.99

Oh by the way, Sprint is kind of special. See, they make you pay an extra $10 for having a smartphone. Therefore, increase the previous prices to $79.99, $99.99, and $109.99  respectively.

AT&T

  • $69.99- Unlimited Calling
  • $59.99- 900 mins
  • $39.99- 450 mins

Plus

  • $20- Unlimited Text

Plus

  • $45- 4 GB
  • $25- 2 GB
  • $15- 200 MB
  • *extra charge for going over

Ok, so let’s add this up shall we. You will need unlimited text most likely, so that’s $20 already. And let’s say you get the lowest min and data plan; you are paying $74.99. Meh not too bad. BUT, with the other services you are getting limited everything for about $90 to $100.

We are even going to talk about Verizon. We know it’s up there in prices.

So, now you can see why I’m leaning towards prepaid. So, let’s look at some of the prepaid companies.

Virgin Mobile

  • $35- Unlimited text and data, 300 mins
  • $45- Unlimited text and data, 1200 mins
  • $55- Unlimited everything
  • *No contract, sign up fee, etc.
  • *Mins means mins, there are no nights/weekends

Virgin Mobile probably has the best selection of phones on the prepaid market; their androids range from $90 t0 $300. This service is powered by Sprint, so the coverage is OK.

Boost Mobile

  • $55- for unlimited everything (android plan)
  • *for every 6 months you pay your bill on time, your plan shrinks by $5.

Boost is also powered by Sprint. They don’t have a whole bunch of high-end phones, but they have three or four.

Walmart Mobile

  • $45- for unlimited mins and text

Plus

  • $10- 100 MB of data that lasts for 2 months
  • $40- 500 MB of data that lasts for 2 months

Walmart Mobile is powered by T-Mobile.

So, those are the main prepaid break down prices. To be honest, I don’t know what I’m going to do. If I to pick a contract plan, it would be T-Mobile or Sprint. If I went prepaid, it would be Boost or Virgin.

Good…and Bad Times.

So, the other day I was watching TV Land and Good Times came on. Now, I had nothing to do, so, I watched a few episodes.

Now, over the past few years, I’ve heard some criticisms about the show, particularly about Florida.

But, those rumors seem to be true!

Florida Evans tried to hold James down!

For example, in one episode, James found $27,000 at his store. He decided to turn it into the police, well, at least he turned in $25,000 of it. When Florida found out that he kept $2,000, she went OFF. First, she nagged him. Then she brought the children into it. She even suggested that Thelma go out to the corner and turn tricks to get money. Basically she tried to guilt James into giving the money back.

Now in the end he did.

So, for giving the money to the police, James got $50 in food at the grocery store that he worked at. Basically, they gave him a gift card (if they would have had gift cards back then).

There are other examples, but that’s one that really sticks out. I guess it’s like this; Florida and James weren’t were on the same level. Florida was was a goodie-goodie, James was willing to bend the rules every once in a while.

Therefore, every time James tried to pull the family to new heights, Florida pulled him back down.

Anyway, that’s all my thoughts on this subject for today. Leave comments if you want to.

Peace!

Funny, or Bad Morals?

So yesterday in one of my classes we were talking about video games. One of the presenters for the day showed us this video.

For those who don’t know, this game is World of Warcraft.

Now, let me give you the background of this story. So, there was a girl who had passed away, and this girl was a really big WoW player. So her friends and her guild held a memorial service in the game to commemorate her death. Now, on the particular server that the service was held on, there was this real arrogant guild. This group got enjoyment from jerks to everyone. So, what they did was, they sent a covert agent into service while the rest of the group was hiding nearby.

Once the guy gave the signal, his guild came out and killed everyone.

Now, the question that we were asked was if the situation was funny or immoral (by the way, this event happened a while ago).

I was quiet during discussion, mostly because I couldn’t pick a side. On one hand, the action was very disrespectful. I mean, a real woman did die. A lot of people don’t understand, but, you do make close friends when you play MMORPG games.

Then again, that action was ingenious. They used covert tactics, deception, etc. In any other situation, these tactics would probably be praised.

Soooo, was it morally wrong?

That’s just something to think about.

Switching Teams: Heading over to T-Mobile

So, for the past year or so, I’ve been with Cincinnati Bell. And can I say, the experience has been…interesting. One, my phone broke maybe 5 months after I bought it.

So, I had to get a replacement, which was also messed up. Alright, let me describe what happened. My original phone’s touch-screen died, so they sent me a refurbished phone. Now, the refurbished phone’s video camera was jacked up. So, I called customer service, how were less than helpful.

Anyway, so my entire family is heading over to T-Mobile. The prices are cheaper AND we all get to have an Android. I’m excited about this, because I’ve been wanting to get a Android for a LONG time. By the way, does T-Mobile only sell Androids? I ask because that’s the only thing I saw on their sight, minus the two BlackBerry phones and the one Windows Mobile phone.

So right now, I’ve got my eye on three different phones.

Samsung Galaxy S™ 4G:

One of the best looking Androids that I’ve seen. It’s also one of the better-rated phones that T-Mobile has. If I can, this is the one that I’d like to have.

LG Optimus T

This is a nice looking one as well. The specs are cool, and people don’t seem to have a lot of problems with it. My only gripe is that the phone looks a lil’ small.

T-Mobile G2x

I love the look of this phone. However, it’s been getting LOTS of bad reviews.

Anyway, if yaw got any suggestions, let me know.

Peace!

What’s Wrong with Soccer!?

I’ve always had a problem with people who look down at soccer. I know a lot of men think that soccer is a sissy sport, or a sport that is inferior to other “American sports.”

I played soccer of seven years, and I must say I was quite good at it. However, when I got older, I realized that “some” people were not pleased that I played soccer, particularly my father. Although he didn’t come out and directly say it, during one of our talks he conveyed that he wished I had played football (American” instead.

The reason why I started thinking about this is because I had another talk with my dad last week. He told me that my lil’ sister is now starting to play soccer; my little brother is playing football. And throughout the talk, he wanted to focus more on football instead.

Side note, I want to say how proud I am of my sister. She is actually playing all the exact same positions that I did. I play goalkeeper, centre-back, and sweeper.

That's Freddy Adu folks

Anyway, I can’t see why people call soccer inferior. Those who have played know that soccer is intense. I also played basketball and did get any injuries from that. But from playing soccer, I’ve gotten knocked over, kicked in the shin, and once I popped my knee out.

Maybe it is the way soccer is marketed. I could see why black (in the U.S.)people might look down on soccer. For one, a lot of the time one has to pay dues to be on a soccer team at an early age. Two, there aren’t many soccer fields in the hood. And three, once a person gets older, they will certainly have to pay boatloads of money in order to get on a club team.

But, you got to remember soccer is the largest sport in the world; it’s played in almost every country.I mean come on, the island of Samoa has national team

Anyway, I just want people to chill out with all the soccer hate. Even if you don’t like it, respect the players, because they work hard, trust me.

Anyway, peace!

Gripes with the paper

I had a thought the other day. I was looking at my school newspaper when something caught my eye. It was a small box that was highlighting an article online.

This article was about a speaker anmed James Moore.

Mr. was giving a speech about the low graduation rates of African-American males. Here is the article if you want to check it out.

Anyway, I have a problem with my newspaper. This was a relevant speech and about 8 percent of OU’s student population is black; there are many black males here. However, for whatever reason, this article was pushed to online only.

Now, I’m a journalist myself, and I understand the editing process. I understand that each Editor has different views on what is newsworthy and relevant. However, this particular story and the information that Mr. Moore presented meets all the qualifications.

This may be a heavy accusation, but, I think that our newspaper isn’t as in-tune to the black community here in Athens as they should be.

But wait, they covered Rev. Jesse Jackson when he came here a week or two ago right?

True, they did. But, let me point out something, the content of each speech.

Rev. Jackson came to talk about poverty. True, poverty affects ALL races. However, we are in Appalachia, and the people who live here look more like the editors of the paper.

Moore’s speech nonetheless was speaking directly to the black population, specifically the black male population.

Now before you mis-read my words, I don’t think that the staff is intentionally. I  biased, I just think they should pay more attention to issues pertaining to black people. There is no reason not to, they cover other ethnic events and they get coverage in the paper.

Here is my finally thought. Putting the Moore article online is a bit of a blow to me as a black man. And maybe that is what all this comes down to. By putting it online, you are requiring people to go out of their way to get some pretty relevant and informative facts. And because you are making them go out of their way, how  many people do you really think are going to search for it? A few dedicated readers will, but most will pass it by. And because the article and speech were directed to me specifically, it feels like a slap in the face kind of.

Oh well, best to suck it up right?

Kayne Shrug

Well, that’s all I got for now. I’ll probably hit you all with something else later tonight. Until then, peace!

Thoughts about “Metro”

I was thinking about something earlier today.

Why do why label men who take care of themselves as “Metrosexuals”? And why does the title “metrosexual” have a negative stigma?

This is one definition I found on Urban Dictionary:

Metrosexual

A straight man who embraces the homosexual lifestyle, i.e. refined tastes in clothing, excessive use of designer hygiene products, etc. Usually is on the brink of homosexuality.

Wait hold up!

Soooo, refined clothing is now a bad thing? so if I look like hobo-Joe, that’s acceptable. But a nice suit frowned upon?

Who wouldn't want that suit?

I’m just wondering, what is wrong with dressing nice and actually combing your hair? And again, what’s the point of the label? To me, it’s a bit demeaning. And, most people probably won’t identify themselves as metro anyway.

But hey, that’s my thoughts.

Peace!

Dressing Up

I’ve learned alot by attending Ohio University for four years. I’ve learned a great deal by just watching and observing.

The other night, my friends and I were working; it was a Saturday night. The official “Ice Breaker” of the quarter was that night. It just so happens that we were working close to where the event was being held.

Boy, them black women were showing OUT!

It’s crazy at OU, because some of those women who looked like a million bucks Sat. NEVER dress up unless there’s a party to be had. Now, of course you have got the one’s that always look presentable, I’m not made at them one bit. I’m more concerned with these ladies who be knocked out at 7 am in the library wearing sweats, but you all think you are the ish on a Sat. night.

My main question is, why can’t we all just be presentable all the time? This includes dudes, basketball shorts EVERYDAY aint cool brother.
